Reports about all the "happenings" within each grade level - reported to us by the 5th grade students.
In language arts, the kindergarteners are working on writing stories with a beginning,
middle, and end. They are also learning about maps, gloves, and famous Americans in social studies.
Living things
and plant and animal life cycles are the topics in science. In math, they are finishing measurement and money and will soon
start studying addition and subtraction.
Kindergarteners are having lots of fun typing stories and creating maps
on Pixie. They also enjoyed the spring parade that took place in March. There is a Young Scientist lesson in May, and they
have enjoyed the program this year.

First grade students are learning about ending in words, like, -er, and -est, main ideas, and cause and effect in
language arts and reading. In math, they are learning about measurement, money, geometry, and fractions. Plants and natural
resources are the topics in science. Also, they are learning about Eleanor Roosevelt in social studies.
By using technology and 21st Century Skills they are learning about
Wordle, Discovery Education, Pixie, and slideshows, such as, Keynote. A special project that they are working on is Career
Day.
Some reminders for parents are to read each night and wear appropriate clothes
and shoes to school. The first grade teachers want to thank all the parents for their wonderful support! Also, the first graders
have a field trip on the 28th of April.

Second graders are learning many things. In reading and language arts, they are studying
verbs, reading, accuracy, and reading with expression. Students are learning time and measurement in math.
In science, they are following the life cycle. In social studies, the students are being introduced
to Ancient China, Ancient Egypt, and economics and resources. There will be a Young Scientist lesson in May. We would like
to remind second graders to do their best every day!

Third grade students
are working hard! In language arts, they are reading new books for novel studies. Their first book report
on a fiction book is called “People Pop Up”. In social studies, the third graders are learning
about famous explorers. They are finishing up the life cycles unit in science. In math, students are learning
geometry and probability.
Next month the third grade will be visiting the Virginia Fine Arts Museum to see exhibits on ancient Greece and Rome.
As a special activity,
this grade level participates in a flea market.
The third grade teachers would like to remind their students each day
to bring home materials that are needed for homework.

Fourth grade students are continuing their ALL STAR year by working hard! In language
arts and reading they are participating in activities using novel studies, comprehension strategies, and of course, writing.
In math, geometry is the topic. Science looks very interesting with sound. Best of all, in their social studies they are learning
about the Virginia government. They ventured to the Capitol, and are also learning about the Reconstruction Era.
The 21st century technology in fourth includes ‘pixie,’ a program for
painting, and the keyboarding program. Career Day seems like a special day for a special project.
Some reminders for parents are ALWAYS check your planners. Also, study for those SOLs! Don’t
worry… all of the studying will pay off when you see your final score. It will be great!

Fifth graders continue to work hard as they enter the
homes stretch!
Right now in math, fifth grade is doing geometry. The’re doing area, perimeter, and learning all
the vocabulary about circles like diameter, radius, chord, and circumference. Fifth grade is getting ready to learn more about
probability. In science, we’re learning information about matter such as mass and volume. The Young Scientists came
on April 25. Mr.Gagnon visited with his liquid nitrogen lesson on April 27. In language arts, we’re working on guidewords
and comprehension. In social studies, we’re learning about the Southwest states.
In our classes, we are using technology
by using ePat, Keynote, Comic Life, and the Promethean Board. In 5th grade, we’re also working on SOL review. Kids -
don’t forget to do your solar cooker! A reminder for parents is reread the dress code as the warmer months approach.
